Mercedes-Benz announced the all-electric eSprinter, a large van designed for commercial fleets. The eSprinter is based on a similar design as the gasoline-powered Sprinter, but comes with an all-electric powertrain that offers a range of up to 400 kilometers (249 miles) from a 113 kWh battery on the WLTP test cycle (EPA estimates are usually less than WLTP). The eSprinter is a big van at 280" long x 92.3" wide x 107.1" tall and 488.1 cu ft of cargo capcity.
The eSprinter is meant to be a workhorse van, so prepare to be disappointed if you were expecting the typical high-performance characteristics seen in most passenger EVs. The eSprinter only has a single motor that produces 100 kW (136hp) on the standard output model and 150 kW (204hp) on the high output model. The vehicle is limited to only 75mph. The motor drives the rear wheels only.
However, Mercedes-Benz knows their audience and is focusing on bringing some of the nice creature-comforts afforded by EVs. The eSprinter can keep the climate running even while the vehicle is parked, including in garages since it is zero-emissions.
The eSprinter is also equipped with a number of safety features, including blind spot assist, active break assist, and a digital rearview mirror. The van also comes standard with Mercedes-Benz's MBUX infotainment system.
The eSprinter starts at $71,886 for the standard output and $75,316 for the high output models. The eSprinter is one of the first vehicles in this segment, with the only competition at this point being from the Ford E-Transit. The E-Transit is a different class, however, being smaller size, less expensive, and with a 40% smaller battery.
